The Inca Road

Stretching more than 25,000 miles, the Inca road system was one of the engineering wonders of the ancient Americas. It crossed deserts, mountains, and rainforests, connecting the four corners of an empire that reached from modern Colombia to Chile.

Inca runners called chasquis carried messages along the roads in relay teams. A message could travel hundreds of miles in a single day, faster than any horse could have moved through the steep Andean terrain. At intervals along the road, the Inca built rest stops called tambos, where runners could pass off their messages and refresh themselves.
