Glossary
The academic words fifth graders should be able to use by year's end.
- Algorithm Math
- A step-by-step procedure for solving a problem (e.g. the standard multiplication algorithm).
- Columbian Exchange Social
- The transfer of plants, animals, people, and diseases between the Americas, Europe, and Africa after 1492.
- Constellation Science
- A recognizable pattern of stars in the night sky.
- Coordinate plane Math
- A grid formed by two perpendicular number lines used to locate points by ordered pairs (x, y).
- Decimal Math
- A number that uses place value to represent fractions of a whole, written with a decimal point.
- Ecosystem Science
- A community of living organisms together with the non-living parts of their environment.
- Inference ELA
- A conclusion drawn from evidence in the text combined with what you already know.
- Matter Science
- Anything that has mass and takes up space.
- Primary source Social
- A firsthand account or original record from the time period being studied.
- Theme ELA
- The central message or idea a story conveys about life or human nature.
- Volume Math
- The amount of three-dimensional space an object occupies, measured in cubic units.
